Zooey Deschanel recently shed light on the intense behind-the-scenes advocacy required to secure Lamorne Morris's role as Winston Bishop in the beloved sitcom "New Girl." Deschanel, known for her lead role as Jessica Day, revealed her significant involvement in the casting process, emphasizing that while the final ensemble proved to be perfect, it took considerable effort to convince network executives.

During a recent appearance on the Zach Sang Show, Deschanel recounted the early days of casting, praising the budding talents of her co-stars, including Morris, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, and Hannah Simone, who were all at nascent stages of their careers when they joined the show. She noted that while Greenfield and Johnson were quickly cast, she personally championed Hannah Simone for the role of Cece, appreciating Simone's deadpan portrayal that deviated from conventional expectations. However, the most challenging battle was convincing the production team that Morris was the ideal choice for the quirky Winston Bishop.

Morris had initially auditioned for the role of Coach, which was temporarily filled by Damon Wayans Jr. After Wayans' departure for another project, the casting for Winston resumed, with numerous actors auditioning. Despite the continuous stream of hopefuls, Deschanel felt strongly that Morris, who had previously impressed her, was the perfect fit. She, along with Johnson and Greenfield, united to write letters to studio and network heads, advocating for Morris's casting. Their collective persistence paid off, and Morris ultimately landed the role, transforming Winston into a fan-favorite character whose journey continued until the series finale. Morris's dedication to the show extended beyond its run, as he later co-hosted a rewatch podcast, "The Mess Around With Hannah and Lamorne," with Hannah Simone.

Deschanel reflected on this collective effort, acknowledging that such a campaign may have contributed to the remarkable on-screen chemistry among the cast. She likened their bond to that of siblings, forged through long hours and shared experiences, highlighting the deep connection formed during their seven seasons together in the Los Angeles loft. Their story serves as a testament to the power of belief, collaboration, and fighting for what feels right, ultimately leading to a cherished and enduring television legacy.
